Stories about rental deposits disappearing over a scratch that was already there are probably the most common horror story about renting a car in Thailand. Here’s how the deposit and insurance actually work with us, and why it plays out differently.
How the deposit works
When you pick up the car, we take a deposit. It’s there to cover damage that insurance doesn’t, or unpaid fines. The amount depends on the class of car — higher for a seven-seat Fortuner or a Camry, lower for a compact Vios or Yaris ATIV.
The key difference from the “deposit scam” stories: ours is fully refundable. Before handing over the keys, we walk around the car together and photograph any existing marks or scratches, so there’s no argument later about what was already there. If the car comes back in the same condition it left in, the deposit is returned in full, no discussion needed.
What basic insurance covers
Every rental already includes basic third-party liability insurance, covering damage you might cause to someone else’s car, property or person. It does not cover damage to the rental car itself, and it doesn’t remove your personal liability for damage that’s your fault.
When extended coverage is worth it
You can add extended coverage (a collision damage waiver) that reduces or removes your financial responsibility if the rental car itself is damaged or stolen. The difference in daily cost is usually far smaller than the cost of repairing a bumper or a mirror, so if you’re not fully confident driving in Phuket — narrow mountain roads or the rainy season in particular — it’s worth having.
One thing worth repeating here: any insurance only applies if you’re driving on a valid licence, including an International Driving Permit where your country requires one — we cover this in our article on licence rules. Without it, an insurer can deny a claim outright after an accident, and no deposit process changes that.
How to make sure you get your deposit back without stress
- Film the car from all sides on your phone at pickup — your best protection if there’s ever a disagreement at return.
- Ask us exactly what basic insurance covers for your chosen model, and add extended coverage if you have any doubt.
- Return the car with the same fuel level you received it with — a separate cost from the deposit, but a common source of confusion.
- Report any incident immediately, even a small scratch — it works in your favour and speeds up the deposit refund.
